In 42 days, we will have our hands on the game. It seems so close, and so far away! On top of that, we get to play in one last pre-launch hurrah with BWE3 next week. Personally, I’m having a hard time knowing what to do with myself. I have however found a few things that have kept me occupied and entertained in the mean time, and am making some plans for how to spend BWE3 to maximize my experience. This is going to be a shorter than most, but mostly I just wanted to give a shout-out to a few community members that are doing some neat things.
For those of you who want to agonize over a countdown:
A couple of months ago, I got really into using Rainmeter for my desktop. For those unfamiliar, Rainmenter is a really neat add-on for Windows machines that allows you to create, save, and load customizable UI elements. For us, that means we can make cool icons that, for instance, look like Guild Wars (2) skill icons that can launch programs for us. Or in this case, have a countdown timer. Here is a link to the reddit page I found it all on. The great thing about Rainmenter is that you can take or leave any parts you don’t like, as well as customize what they link to. It appears that the countdown is counting to a noon start time, but there really isn’t anywhere that has confirmed whether head start will begin at noon, midnight, or any other time that day. Still, it’s pretty nicely made.
If you need something to give you a daily hit:
WoodenPotatoes is a fantastic member of our community. He has done an enormous amount of very high quality youtube videos on all sorts of GW2 topics. Recently, he started doing a GW2 Daily show. Since the release date was announced, he began The Great Guild Wars 2 Countdown, in which he gives some commentary on any daily news, or just talks about features he finds particularly interesting. He also takes user questions. To his enormous credit, even though I am familiar with everything he is talking about, he still is quite entertaining and engaging to listen to, and that’s a fantastic quality. I highly recommend watching his stuff to all players, new and veteran.
As if he weren’t doing enough, WoodenPotatoes is doing yet another series about GW2. This one is centered around the lore and story of the original Guild Wars campaign, Prophecies. The Guild Wars 2 Story Summary is actually incredibly informative without going into too much minutia. I would have considered myself at least moderately well versed in the story of the original three games (and expansion), but he has proven that there were some key relationships that I had missed, and he’s clarified some of the timelines that I had in a different order internally. They have been great fun to watch, and the art was done by the youtuber Burknstuff.
As you all know, BWE3 is just around the corner. It’s been revealed that we will finally have a chance to look at the Sylvari and Asura starter areas. In many people’s eyes, it’s just as if not more important that we get to finally use the character creation for those races. This will be an excellent time to decide what your main class(es) will be for release, as we have all the options available to us. To those of us that like to tinker around a ton in the creation phase, this can give us a nice head start at making decisions. Speaking of head starts, in the videos that were put out revealing the Asura and Sylvari character creation, I (and others) noticed the addition/reappearance of the Save button.
Anyway, if you will notice, I highlighted the Save Button in the upper right. First appearing in the G-Star demo build (I believe), this button appears to allow you to save your customization options to be quick-loaded later when making a new character. Now, I know that this was from their internal testing server, so this feature might not be in BWE3, but if it is, this will be a really fantastic tool for those of us who take forever to get characters just right. Having access to all 5 races would allow us to get all of our characters out of the way so that we can jump straight into the game at release. Hopefully this will be enabled for us.
EDIT: Welp, looks like that last bit was confirmed to be false. The Save button is for development purposes only, as I had feared. Alas.
That’s about all that’s going on in my realm. What are you guys doing to pass the time leading up to BWE3 and Release? Anyone playing The Secret World? Have any other neat GW2 sources to check out? Leave a comment!
