8/28/2012. It’s Been a Long Road.

It’s finally here. I’m going to say that again, just to get the tingles that accompany it: it’s finally  here. We have a concrete release date for GW2. No longer will we have to speculate, dissect every piece of information, and feel like we are taking shots in the dark. It’s finally here. I just can’t stop saying it. We’ve come a really long way together as a community. We’ve seen huge swings in information, excitement, and numbers throughout the past 5 years. Just thinking about the history of GW and GW2 combined is staggering. A total of 7 years, 4 months, and a few days separated the release of GW1 and GW2. For those of you still in primary/secondary school, that is over half the time you will spend in your pre-college years. For those who are/were in university, that’s almost 2 full degrees worth. To put it in terms for those of us die-hard GW1-ers, we’ve been waiting for GW2 for almost three times as long as new content was being released for GW1. And our wait is finally coming to an end. I’m just going to take another minute to let this feeling sink in.

Whew, ok, still coming down…

Alright. I’d like to take a second to look at where we’ve come from, and where we’re going. Get a whole view of the last 7 years. In the beginning, there was a terrible looking game. That game was the Guild Wars Alpha.

Behold!

That was the state of “our” game back in Alpha. Most of you have probably seen these pictures; they are often toted out whenever people want to make a point about graphics optimizations and how far they can come in a short period of time. Regardless, that was around the time that they hired a lead concept artist, who I believe was Daniel Dociu. He did some vast re-working and gave the team a vision of something that didn’t quite look so much like WoW. Not too long after, pre-release trailers started showing up.

I still get some shivers watching that. Of course, CG trailers never have really shown you the real graphics of the game, but they definitely had improved!

Six months later, ANet delivered a great free content update in the form of Sorrow’s Furnace. Effectively a mini dungeon/quest set, this was the first of many changes we saw in Tyria. One year after the release of Prophecies, we got our first expansion, Guild Wars Factions.

Factions introduced some really great mechanics, new classes, and some gorgeous new scenery (especially the Jade Sea). Alliance Battles, Alliances between Guilds, Jade Quarry/Fort Aspenwood PvP, along with a full new campaign (even though it’s shorter). Further, they broke yet another convention and didn’t raise the level cap. This was fantastic in the eyes of most GW players because it meant their old characters were still just as valid. Just six months after Factions we saw the release of yet another game/campaign, Guild Wars Nightfall.

Thanks to A Tyrian Odyssey for this great shot of the Realm of Torment

Six months after that, our dreams of a continued GW1 experience vanished, and our new fanaticism developed; Guild Wars 2 had been announced (along with Eye of the North). Six more months (give or take), we received GW:EN and then silence.

Originally, GW2 was scheduled to go into beta a mere 1-2 years after the announcement (2008), but that time came and went. Most of 2009 went by without a word. A community still existed somewhat, and Guild Wars 2 Guru started up in the latter half of the year (I believe), but at that point, all there was to talk about was rumor and speculation. Finally, Gamescom rolled around, and the world was surprised and overjoyed to see the first GW2 trailer.

At this point, most of us in the community really thought this game was just around the corner. Beta testing was thought to be coming soon. All this hype had to be going somewhere right? Right? I’m sure most of you remember that feeling, and the crushing weight that started to fall on all of us. Podcasts rose and fell, blogs were created and fell into disrepair. No news was really on the horizon. Many thought the game was coming out in 2011 due to some investor calls. 2011 came and went, and the news got more and more sparse. Finally, at the beginning of 2012, Mike O’Brien announced that this was the year of the dragon. GW2 was officially set to come out this year. Some time. In April, the pre-purchase was announced and went live. Having put down full payments toward the game, many assumed that it would release some time in the next 2-3 months. Tensions have slowly built since then as the date was feeling farther and farther away. The community, in many ways, either started to lay low and rest or bicker constantly. Then, today, June 28, it happened.

And on this day, we finally know. The community no longer needs to speculate. A great feeling of unity has spread across. Most of us are giddy with joy and can’t contain ourselves. It’s finally here.

Awesome post! I really enjoyed re-living the journey through those screenshots and videos.

For the first time in a long time, the words “I can’t wait for the end of summer!” are coming out of my mouth…

  3. […] Greibach explains the timeline much better than I ever could.  I have been playing the beta weekends and everything I see only makes me anticipate the Guild Wars 2 live date more.  This game is going to be awesome – because its been designed from the ground up for fun – not to maintain subscriptions – it is free to play!  Shell out the box charge and that’s it.  No limited content, no ceilings, just have fun.  We certainly did on the beta weekends and we certainly will come live.  […]

Great look back… I remember when that first GW trailer went up at Gamescom (Aug 20, 2009 – almost 3 years ago!). Then when the last profession was revealed late 2011. And, of course, when the pre-order went live… and now FINALLY a release date!

    It’s just awesome.

Oh man, great post! So much nostalgia! And hey, I’d never seen those pictures from the alpha before. I participated in the original beta and remember some of those shots, and how much the game has changed even since then. It has indeed been a long road.

I really disliked GW1 when I tried it. Little things like not being able to run off the edge of something knee height on your toon to bigger things like everything being instances outside towns, I.e. You don’t see anyone for ages when questing. However GW2 is just absolutely staggeringly amazing. The best bits from Rift and WoW but we extra stuff all its own. Have booked sometime off work at launch to add to the head start. Roll on August

Waiting for it with tears in my eyes. Used to play GW1 with my 2 friends. We were kids. One of them past away from cancer 2 years ago and i feel like a part of his memorial is in GW..

Well and I’m just wondering if it will run on mine computer?
    Can’t wait

Well, what can I say. Guild Wars is probably the game that caused more impact in my childhood. I began to play the game when I was 12 (I’m 17 now) and I was really new to the vast world of MMOs. I remember my first reaction when I first stepped on Tyria and the same feeling still live within me. Playing Guild Wars 2 for the first time in my life was a dream came true; I swear with my life that I actually cried. I’ve been following Anets steps since the very beggining and I was really disappointed when they decided to delay the release of Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 means alot to me, personaly, since Guild Wars was my mechanism to escape the hard reality. I see Guild Wars 2 as the begin of a new chapter in my life, since I’m no longer a child and I’m pretty sure during this new chapter of my life, I’ll find comfort among my faithful companions in Tyria. So I thank you Anet and all of the others that work so hard to make many people happy and I honestly can’t wait to step on Tyria once again!

I have similar feelings, though I’m a bit older. GW was my main game throughout college and it helped forge some of the strongest relationships I still have today. I’m looking very forward to creating new memories and bonds with GW2.

      • irawrzdinoo says:

Now that I look back, makes me really sad because we can’t really go back in time. Playing Guild Wars is an experience that’ll never forget, though I’ll make some room to fit in Guild Wars 2!

  14. Wow, those Alpha screen shots are terrible! I’ve played since shortly before Factions was released, and it’s nice seeing the progress in one succinct post. I also keep forgetting how long ago GW2 was supposed to be released. But, MMOs take time, and I’d rather you guys take longer than usual to release something of exceptional quality than push something out and have it be mediocre at best. The betas have been truly amazing, and I know I’ll be enjoying this game for years to come. Thanks for not disappointing us 🙂

  15. xemx71 says:

Great post! Love the vids! What a journey! Ok, think I’m going to do a little dance now and declare that I’m completely lost to GW2! 😀

  16. Guild Wars was my very first MMO, and one of the things that really got me into gaming. Before that I was a casual gamer, and guild wars taught me a lot about gaming, and about life. I got my friends high school into it, and we all still play to this day. It forged bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime.

I remember when I started playing it was during factions, and grew to love the world and franchise that was guild wars.
Great job with a great IP, and I look forward to playing GW2 as well.

  17. Ahhh Guild Wars, a game I spent many years of my life playing.

I really can’t wait for number 2 now, and I will probably devote many more years to it, haha!

  18. saywutdog says:

I played wow for 7 years and im switching to guild wars 2 on the 28th.. I can’t stand wow anymore its become a mindless game that you don’t even have to try to succeed in. That and the wow community is just a bunch of childish trolls who don’t even play the game.

  19. Martyn says:

It has been a heck of a journey, and I am happy that the release date is finally in sight.
I did try other MMO’s after I stopped playing GW, but I could never get the same buzz I got with playing GW. But after being in the open betas, that buzz came back. Bring on the release date!

  20. Xenos says:

Yep, you said it bro. Started in High school, Played through and beyond University, and loved every second.

Alpha was funny as hell. Especially because we never knew what to expect on next patch. When the game finally hit even the Alpha and Beta Players were in awe. We never expected the HUGE scope of the game and the ingenious changes they made post testing.

    Brilliant!

  21. […] I’m sure we all know that feeling – that giddy, excited feeling when we remember that the launch of Guild Wars 2 is in less than two months. To celebrate, take a trip down memory lane with Greibach’s Normal Form. […]

have to admit I am maybe getting older and state of mind has changed. It was a game I appreciated gw so much that felt like an addiction. I want to know if I’d still find time and patience to continue the gw journey in gw2.
